Fiat Panda 169: replacing the front brake pads
CalosGroup editorial team · Published on 3 November 2026 · Fiat Panda (169)
How to replace the front brake pads of the Fiat Panda (169, 2003-2012): tools, disc checks, the steps and bedding in.
The front pads of the Panda 169 can be changed in about an hour with garage tools. They are always changed in pairs on the same axle, and the disc must be checked before fitting them.
What you need
- jack and axle stand, wheel brace;
- spanners for the caliper bolts;
- piston rewind tool (or a clamp);
- wire brush, brake paste, gloves;
- torque wrench.
Before you start: the disc
The minimum thickness is engraved on the edge of the disc. If the disc is below that value, deeply scored or has a high lip, replace it together with the pads: new pads on a worn disc brake badly and wear out quickly.
After the change
Before driving off, press the pedal several times until it is firm again: the first time it may go to the floor, because the piston has to come back into contact. For the first 200 km brake progressively, without sudden stops: this beds in the pads.
The steps
- Park on level ground, apply the handbrake and loosen the front wheel bolts by half a turn while the car is still on the ground.
- Lift the car with the jack at the specified point, rest it on the axle stand and remove the wheel.
- Check the disc thickness: if it is below the minimum engraved on the edge or scored, replace it together with the pads.
- Undo the caliper bolts and slide the caliper off without letting it hang from the brake hose: tie it up with a cable tie.
- Remove the old pads and clean the seat with the wire brush, without compressed air: brake dust must not be breathed in.
- Push the piston back with the tool, watching the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.
- Fit the new pads with their clips and, if present, the wear sensor; a thin layer of brake paste only on the backing plate and contact points.
- Refit the caliper and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's torque.
- Refit the wheel, lower the car and tighten the bolts crosswise with the torque wrench.
- Repeat on the other front wheel.
- Press the brake pedal several times until it is firm, then drive the first 200 km with gentle braking.
