On Sunday 1 November 2026, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix. He only needed ninth place to be sure of the title: with four races still to go, the 2026 drivers' world championship is his.
Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, ahead of Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari. Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, stayed right behind them all the way to the chequered flag.
The records
- he is the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history: 20 years and 68 days. The record belonged to Sebastian Vettel, champion in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days;
- he is the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
