Microcars: the maintenance you must not skip
CalosGroup editorial team · Published on 3 November 2026
Variator and belt, brakes, battery, oil and tyres: the checks that keep a microcar safe and within the legal limits.
A microcar has a small engine and a variator transmission: few parts, but they work hard, especially in city traffic. Following the manufacturer's intervals costs little and avoids expensive failures.
The points to watch
- variator belt and rollers: they wear with use, and when they are worn out the microcar accelerates badly or slips;
- brakes: pads and fluid, with the same care as a car;
- battery: with many short trips it runs down easily, especially in winter;
- engine oil and filters: at the intervals in the handbook;
- tyres: pressure and wear, because the vehicle is light and grip matters.
Do not modify the variator, ECU or exhaust to go faster: light quadricycle microcars have a legal maximum speed of 45 km/h, and tampering can lead to fines and the vehicle being stopped.
The steps
- Check the maintenance intervals for your model in the handbook.
- Every month: tyre pressure, lights, oil level and brake fluid.
- If the microcar accelerates jerkily or the engine revs up without the car speeding up, have the variator belt and rollers checked.
- In winter, if you only do short trips, charge the battery with a charger from time to time.
- Have the oil and filters changed at the intervals in the handbook, even if the mileage is low.
