The clutch kit - plate, pressure plate and release bearing - connects and disconnects the engine and the gearbox. The plate has a friction lining that wears a little every time you pull away.

There is no fixed interval: depending on use it lasts 100,000 to 200,000 kilometres. The signs are an engine that revs up without the car accelerating, a pedal that bites higher and higher, and a burning smell on hills. On diesel engines torque is higher and the flywheel is often dual-mass: when the clutch is replaced it is worth checking its play.

The whole kit is replaced, because removing the gearbox costs more than the parts. The engine, the fitted gearbox and the flywheel matter: if it is a dual-mass flywheel, it is assessed together with the clutch. On a high-mileage car, with the gearbox off, it is worth replacing the crankshaft oil seal too if it is weeping: it costs little and the job is the same.
