The clutch kit - plate, pressure plate and release bearing - connects and disconnects the engine and the gearbox. The plate has a friction lining that wears a little every time you pull away.

There is no fixed interval: depending on use it lasts 100,000 to 200,000 kilometres. The signs are an engine that revs up without the car accelerating, a pedal that bites higher and higher, and a burning smell on hills. On diesel engines torque is higher and the flywheel is often dual-mass: when the clutch is replaced it is worth checking its play.
