The battery starts the engine and powers the electronics when the engine is off. On cars with start-stop it works much harder: it discharges and recharges at every traffic light.

It lasts 4 to 6 years on average. The signs are a slow start in the morning, especially in the cold, lights that dim when starting and a start-stop system that stops cutting in. On diesel engines the cranking current matters more: starting a cold diesel takes a lot of energy in an instant.
