This is the surface on which the pads turn movement into heat. It wears down in thickness and distorts with temperature swings, and a distortion of a few hundredths of a millimetre is where the pulsing you feel through the pedal comes from.

When the thickness drops below the minimum — stamped on the disc itself — or when the pedal pulses under braking. In practice every second set of pads, but the number to go by comes off a caliper gauge, not off the odometer. On a fully loaded commercial vehicle the discs run much hotter: the minimum thickness comes sooner, and a passenger-car disc does not have the mass to shed that heat.

Diameter, thickness, height and number of holes all have to match, and solid and vented are not interchangeable. Replace them in pairs on the same axle, and always with new pads. On a car that has stood for a long time the disc oxidises on the outer band: if rust has eaten into the edge, wearing the pads down will not bring it back.
