The glow plug heats the combustion chamber of diesel engines before starting and in the first minutes. Diesel ignites by compression, and with a cold engine that extra heat is needed.

They last a long time, often over 100,000 kilometres, but they fail one at a time. The signs are a slow cold start, white smoke in the first minutes and a flashing glow plug light. On modern diesels the glow plugs stay on after starting to reduce emissions and noise: a faulty one can be felt even with the engine already running.
