This is the silent block that joins the control arm to the body: a cylinder of rubber and metal that absorbs road vibration and holds the suspension geometry in place.

You hear it before you see it: a dull knock over bumps, a steering wheel that shakes under braking, a car that pulls to one side. The rubber cracks and gives way, and from then on the wheel angle is no longer the one it was designed to be.

What matters is the position on the arm — front or rear — and the diameter. After fitting it the alignment has to be checked: a new bush moves the toe-in, and without a check a new tyre is gone in a few thousand kilometres. On a car a few years old the rubber gives way through age even without mileage: it cracks standing still, and you can see it with the wheel turned.
