Timing belt kit Volvo V40 II D3 (2012–2019)

About this model

The Volvo V40 II was built from 2012 to 2019.

The main engines of this generation are D2, D3, T3.

About this part

The timing belt turns the camshaft in sync with the crankshaft. If it snaps, on many engines the valves hit the pistons, and the damage is serious.

It is replaced by mileage or by age, whichever comes first: depending on the engine between 90,000 and 240,000 kilometres, or every 5 to 10 years. The interval comes from the manufacturer and is not extended: a belt gives no warning before it breaks. On diesel engines the belt works under a heavier load: keeping to the interval, in years too, is essential.

The complete kit is replaced - belt, tensioner and idlers - and often the water pump, which is usually driven by the same belt. Not every engine has a belt: some have a chain, with their own kits, and the version tells you which yours has. On a car whose service history you do not know, the timing belt is the first thing to replace: it costs less than an engine.

This page is for the D3 engine. Even with the same engine the part can change from one version to another - power, year, gearbox - which is why choosing the version remains the step that gives certainty.
